Praslin and La Digue in One Day from Mahé: The Honest Arithmetic

You are staying on Mahé. Every desk on the island sells a day trip that takes in both Praslin and La Digue, and the pitch is always the same: see all three main islands in one holiday. What nobody puts on the poster is the shape of that day – ten or eleven hours door to door, a large part of it sitting on a catamaran, and a price that runs from €199 to €266 per person.

Sometimes that is exactly the right purchase. Often it is not. The difference comes down to two questions, and both have factual answers rather than opinions.

Question one: how much of the day is transport?

The islands are not close together in the way a map suggests. The Cat Cocos catamaran is the fast option and it still takes about 1 hour 15 minutes from Mahé to Praslin, from around €56 per adult one way in economy. Routed through to La Digue it is about 1 hour 45 minutes, from around €68.

An organised day trip does that crossing twice, adds the short inter-island hop, and fits transfers at both ends around it. On an eleven-hour tour, you are looking at a large share of the day spent moving rather than standing still on a beach.

That is not a criticism of the tours – there is no faster way to do it, short of a domestic flight to Praslin. It is simply the fact that decides whether the day is worth it to you.

Question two: what do you actually want to see?

The two islands are not interchangeable, and this is where the trip is either brilliant or a blur.

Praslin is about the interior: the Vallée de Mai, the coco de mer palms, and Anse Lazio on the north-west coast. A guided visit to the Vallée de Mai takes time – there are several walking routes and they run from about 1.5 km to about 4 km – and the reserve closes its gate to new visitors before it closes its doors.

La Digue is about moving slowly. There is almost no motor traffic; petrol motorbikes and scooters are not permitted, and most of the few cars on the island belong to hotels. The island is built around bicycles, and the point of it is rolling along a flat coast road with nothing coming the other way.

A one-day tour gives you a version of both. It does not give you either properly.

The listings, and the one that needs saying out loud

The Praslin and La Digue Shared Trip with Lunch is the most-booked version: €199 for ten hours, 4.2 stars from 316 reviews. That is the baseline.

The Praslin & La Digue Island-Hopping Tour with Lunch runs eleven hours at €266, 4.3 stars from 233 reviews. An hour longer, a good deal more expensive, marginally better rated.

And then there is the one to think hard about. Mahé: Praslin with Vallée de Mai & La Digue with lunch is €250 for ten hours and holds 3.4 stars from 173 reviews. Of every listing in this inventory with more than a hundred reviews, that is the lowest score there is – and 173 is not a small sample. A tour that puts the Vallée de Mai, La Digue and two ferry crossings into a single day is attempting the most of the three, and those reviewers have told you how that goes. Read the recent ones before you book it, not after.

The best of the double-island group is the quietest of them: Praslin Island and La Digue Island Day Tour, €253 for ten hours, 4.5 stars from 111 reviews. Fewer people have been on it, which is why it rarely gets recommended, but it is rated higher than the two everyone books.

The version that works better for most people

Drop one island. The La Digue Boat Trip with Bike Rental from Mahé is €153 for eight hours, 4.6 stars from 302 reviews, and the bike is included. It is cheaper than every double-island tour on the list, shorter by two to three hours, and better rated than any of them. You get one island with enough time in it to remember the place rather than the schedule.

That rating gap is the whole argument. The four double-island days out of Mahé run from 3.4 to 4.5. The single-island version is at 4.6, and the equivalent trip starting from Praslin rather than Mahé is at 4.8. People are telling you something consistent: the fewer crossings in the day, the better it goes.

Or move. If your trip is long enough, spend two nights on Praslin. From there, Curieuse and St Pierre become a normal morning rather than an expedition – the most-reviewed boat day in the country leaves from there, from €46.53 – and La Digue is a short ferry hop, not an hour and three quarters.

When the one-day trip is genuinely the right answer

Three cases, and they are real:

• You have one free day and you are not coming back. Seeing a compressed version of both islands beats seeing neither.
• You do not want to move hotels. Changing islands mid-holiday means packing, ferries with luggage, and a second check-in.
• Somebody else is doing the logistics. Buying tickets, matching ferry times and finding the right jetty on three islands is work. A shared tour is you paying for that work not to be yours.

If any of those describe your trip, book the 4.2-star baseline and treat the day as a sampler rather than a visit.
