The roads are narrow, they climb and wind, and the things worth seeing are strung out along both coasts with a mountain range between them. There is one place on Mahé where this stops being about convenience.

Read that twice, because both halves matter. This one trail you may not walk unaccompanied, and it shuts at midday – so a lie-in rules out the summit path entirely. A driver who is also a licensed guide, or a tour that includes one, is the practical route up.

The limit matters as much as the rule: this is that trail, not the whole national park. The other trails are open 8am to 4pm, cost less and require no guide – Copolia SCR 100, Trois Frères and Anse Major SCR 150 each. On licences, minimum age, excess and the deposit: operators set these individually, and the figures differ enough between companies that quoting one here would mislead you. Read the terms on the booking you are actually making, and check what your own insurance already covers before you buy anything at the desk. If your Mahé time is a single day between flights, a driver is a lot of money for a day you will spend watching the clock.
