Southern Mahé: Wild South Bus Tour, Private Driver or Your Own Rental Car?
Updated October 28, 2026 · 6 min read
Travelling alone or as a pair, book the Wild South Discovery Trip with Local Lunch: €117.65 per person, seven hours, 4.9 stars from 46 reviews. Three people or more should price the private customizable full-day tour first, because €250 is charged per group of up to three. The shorter private island tour with hotel transfer costs €165 per group of up to three and lasts four hours.
| Tour | Duration | Price | Rating | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wild South Discovery Trip with Local Lunch | 7 hours | €117.65 per person | 4.9 (46) | one or two people who want lunch included |
| Private Customizable Full-Day Tour with Hotel Pickup | 7h 30m | €250 per group of up to 3 | 4.4 (171) | families and trios who choose their own stops |
| Private Customizable Island Tour with Hotel Transfer | 4 hours | €165 per group of up to 3 | 4.5 (104) | a half day with Sauzier Waterfall and Anse Royal |
What does the Wild South bus tour actually say?
Very little. The listing calls it a “bus tour” of Mahé’s southern wonders, adds a local lunch, and names no stops. Treat the 4.9 as a verdict on the guide and the pacing, not a promise about a particular beach. With 46 reviews it is also the smallest sample of the three, so read recent comments on the booking page for the stops they mention before you commit.
A scheduled group day suits you if you do not want to decide anything: no parking, no navigation, no lunch to find. It does not suit you if you want to stay at one bay for two hours, since a bus follows a plan.

When does a private car win on price?
Arithmetic decides this one. Two people on the bus pay €235.30; the €250 private day costs €14.70 more for the pair and gets you your own stops and 30 extra minutes. Three people pay €352.95 on the bus against €250 for the car, a gap of €102.95. The full-day tour has 171 reviews but a lower 4.4, and its description says only that you will visit “some of the most popular sights and tourist attractions” on the island, so the south is something you ask the driver for, not something you are promised.
The four-hour tour is the only private listing that names places: Sauzier Waterfall and Anse Royal Beach. It will not fill a day, but it can sit comfortably in the middle of one. Neither private listing includes lunch in its description. For how a Mahé driver day usually works, see our guide to Mahé with a driver.

And if you drive yourself?
A rental car gives the most freedom, but it also asks you to drive on the left on roads that bend constantly, which our rental-car guide describes in more detail. The sensible split is to do one drive you enjoy and book a tour for the rest, as in the scenic drive from Beau Vallon to Port Launay. Compare cars and cover for your dates on Discover Cars; read the excess and deposit before you pay.
Who should do none of these?
Anyone whose main goal is a boat day. Southern Mahé by road is scenery and stops, not snorkelling, and the reef trips described in that guide start from Victoria and Eden Island, not from the south; see the Sainte Anne boat guide.
The verdict
For one or two people, take the Wild South bus tour. For three, the private full day is cheaper per head and more flexible. Drive yourself only if you are happy to navigate unfamiliar bends and have a second person who can read the map.
